The Boons of Artificial Intelligence…
What encouraged me start this series is today’s Cricket World cup match…
The Cricket World Cup is in full swing, and today’s exciting clash was between top contenders New Zealand and India. It was thrilling to witness India’s performance in both innings, leading to their victory. Some might have predicted it, but it’s always a joy to watch as you never know until the last ball. ;-)
During the match, the influence of Artificial Intelligence in sports became evident. While some fear AI might replace jobs, I believe it empowers and augments our capabilities.
Many instances in the match showcased the use of DRS and other AI & VR technologies. DRS (Decision Review System) introduced back in 2008 in test Cricket first, this is powered by machine learning, aims to ensure the utmost fairness in decisions. Despite its critiques, it’s becoming ubiquitous in matches.
This technology isn’t confined to cricket alone. In football, VAR (Video Assistant Referee), enhanced by AI, provides accurate decisions. Tennis boasts of Hawk-Eye, another AI marvel, ensuring spot-on line calls. And in swimming, AI-integrated wearables are refining athlete techniques.
Sure, AI advancements raise eyebrows here as well.
A batsman might not always agree with an AI-determined DRS decision, but it undeniably brings fairness to the game.
Having been in tech for years, I am fascinated by how AI is amplifying sports precision and integrity. While challenges exist, the ongoing digital wave is reshaping sports in profound ways.
To the naysayers highlighting AI’s potential pitfalls, I would argue that, like any tool its impact is defined by its use & use-cases. AI biases stem from the training data provided, where humans play a pivotal role in shaping it. And, as history speaks, Humans have their biases. It would be interesting to see: how do we ensure neutrality and develop counter AI models to detect those anomalies.
But no doubt, in the realm of sports- AI is emerging as an unsung hero, championing transparency and sportsmanship.
